Honey Bee Supplies: 3 Must Have Supplies For Raising Honey Bees

Raising honey bees is a rewarding task for many people.  You get the huge advantage of natures perfect sweetener - honey, and you can also make a tidy profit.  Here are the 3 essential honey bee supplies that you absolutely must have to get started.

#1. Protective gear.

Most beekeepers wear at least a veil and hat with long sleeves and pants.  Many (especially new beekeepers) also use gloves when handling the beehive.   Protective beekeeping gear is important in order to prevent stings.

#2. A bee smoker.

The purpose of the bee smoker is to calm the bees down so that the beekeeper can safely handle the hive.  There are many different types of bee smokers on the market, and what you buy depends a great deal on the size of operation you intend on running.

Bee smokers can be run on many different types of fuels.  These fuels include hessian, twine, burlap, pine needles, corrugated cardboard, and mostly rotten or punky wood. Some beekeeping supply sources also sell commercial fuels like pulped paper and compressed cotton, or even aerosol cans of smoke.

#3. The hives and the bees.

The easiest way to get set up in a beekeeping operation is to buy bee hives for sale that are premade and to buy the initial bees for your bee colony.  If you are handy, you can also build the bee hives yourself.   A quality hive is very important to your overall beekeeping operation.
